The Last River continues the story of Caleb Thomason and the beautiful half-breed girl, Sparrow, which began in Loy's first novel, Beyond Double Mountain. Caleb and Sparrow settle in Dodge City, Kansas, in the late 1870's, wishing to start a new life together. Their peace is shattered when Sparrow is kidnapped while Caleb is away and held captive in No Man's Land, the strip of wilderness between the Cimarron and Canadian Rivers. A rescue is attempted by Dodge City citizens, including Dr. Thomas McCarty and Doc Holliday. Determined to find his wife, Caleb traverses the uninhabited plains in search for her. His rescue of Sparrow is successful, but their peace is short-lived. Relocating to the Texas panhandle town of Mobeetie, trouble finds the couple again. Caleb and Sparrow must fight for their lives in the climatic end to the novel.
